I also very much enjoy working with older people. I have worked with adult clients from the age of 18 - 86 years. Some of my older clients have accessed counselling before and have already experienced the value of spending time in a confidential space sharing and reflecting on different aspects of their lives.
Some of my older adults have never worked with a counsellor before. Many of these clients have arrived in the first session feeling very anxious and uncertain as to whether they will benefit from and continue with the counselling process.
Feedback to me from some of my older clients:
"I never realised how much having someone to listen to me could help me. I never thought I needed counselling, but it's wonderful. I can talk to you about anything. It's a shame I didn't come 3 years ago. I am talking more freely now. Counselling has released something in me. I have never spoken to anyone about my own death before. Thinking about it kept me up at night. I don't worry in the same way now. I am sleeping better. I have contacted people I've not spoken to for years and they're so glad to hear from me. It's slowed my thinking down. I no longer run at problems. I stop and think. It's been great." (A client in their 80s)
"Thank you for your kindness. I have discovered so much about myself in our sessions and I have already begun to make the changes I now know I want in my life."(A client in their 70s)
"Our sessions have helped me to look at things I've locked away in boxes." (Another client in their 70s.)
